A die-plunger machine for erecting box blanks having a locking tongue 20, Fig. 5a, on one wall 16 inserted in a slot 23 in the adjacent wall 18 extending outwardly at 24 from the bottom panel 14, the outer portion 26 of the slot being directed away from panel 16, comprises tongueinserting fingers 52, Figs. 4 and 5, and means for moving the fingers inwards and downwards of the die as the plunger descends, the fingers being mounted independently of the plunger 1 and being retractable upwards and outwards as the plunger is withdrawn. The blanks b are drawn by plunger 36 between plates 40, 42 of the die in known manner, tongues 20, and flaps 22, Fig. 5a, engaging folders 44 as end walls 16 are swung upright by engagement with curved fingers 46. The flaps defined by cuts 23 are bowed outwardly by pins (not shown) projecting from the plunger. Tongue 20 is prevented by material i, Fig. 5, at its end from entering freely within the slit 26, and is snapped into place by the finger 52. The fingers are attached to links 54 pivotally connected to arms 56, 58, the arms 56 being secured to shafts 60 secured to frames 64. The links 66 are normally latched in an upright position and are pivotally connected to shafts 60. A projecting bar (not shown) and depressor foot 118 on the plunger engage a roller 117 when the plunger descends, rotating operating member 94 and with it both shafts 60, which are interconnected by a link 112. The simultaneous contrary rotation of the shafts operates the parallel linkwork moving the finger to positions indicated dotted in Fig. 4. The latches are released by means not shown, the links 66 swing away from the die, and the fingers follow a path c, Fig. 4, and thereafter a path d to return to their upper original position as the plunger is withdrawn. |
