PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a lens from colliding with a disk inexpensively without using a sensor which detects initial displacement of a focusing coil regardless of whether an installation direction of an apparatus is vertically long or horizontally long. SOLUTION: A microcomputer 113 applies driving voltage or driving current to a focusing coil 109 so that an objective lens 105a approaches a disk 101 and starts focus search while the objective lens is moving. Driving voltage or driving current of the focusing coil when a voltage value or current value of a focus error signal FE detected in searching reaches a prescribed value is driving voltage or driving current corresponding to a limit position where the lens most closely approaches the disk, and with the driving voltage or driving current as a limit, the focusing coil is controlled.
