PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly precisely position a reflecting mirror 19 while downsizing the device with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: The scanning optical device 16 comprises: a light emitting optical system; a reflecting mirror 19 for returning luminous flux 3 emitted from the light emitting optical system; a deflector 23 for deflection-scanning the luminous flux 3 guided by the reflecting mirror 19; and an optical box 29 including these inside. Also, the device 16 is characterized in that the optical box 29 has reference planes for attachment 43Y, 41Z abutting on two abutment planes 19X, 19Z which are orthogonal to a luminous flux reflecting plane 19X in the reflecting mirror 19 and are orthogonal to each other.
