A function for selecting and determining a receiving mode in a telephone is provided to enable a receiver to protect his privacy without missing important calls by transmitting an automatic response message if a call is received in case a call denial function is required when the receiver is in bed or conference. The user of a mobile phone establishes a call denial mode. If a caller makes a call to the user, the mobile phone sends an automatic response message to the caller. Listening to the automatic response message, the caller makes a decision to select a key button. In case the caller selects and presses the first key button to make a call connection with the user, the mobile phone automatically transfers to a generic receiving mode and rings a bell. If the caller selects the second key button to leave a message only, the mobile phone receives the message and outputs a message destination sound.
