<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method and apparatus capable of performing an appropriate vectorizing process matching the kind of image by determining whether or not a clip art image has features such as edges or gradations. <P>SOLUTION: A document image including a clip art image is input to the image processing apparatus via an input part 11 and vectorized. To do this, the input document image is divided into regions by a region separating part 12 and the clip art image is selected by a clip art image selecting part 13. Then a clip art image kind identifying part 14 identifies the kind of the clip art image according to whether or not there are edges or gradations, and a clip art image region dividing part 15 further divides the clip art image into regions according to the kind of the image identified.
