PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always surely perform range-finding to a projection surface regardless of a distance to the projection surface or a zoom viewing angle, and to reflect a result of range-finding in projection content. SOLUTION: The projection device is equipped with: a projection system for projecting an image corresponding to an input image signal and including a micro-mirror element 27 having a mechanism for varying a projection viewing angle and a projection lens 12; a range-finding sensor 13, a motor 17 (M); a range-finding processing part 36 for measuring distances to a plurality of range-finding points in a projecting direction by the projection system; a threshold setting means for setting a threshold based on a result obtained by measuring the distances to the predetermined range-finding points by range-finding; a judging means for judging the range-finding point within the effective range of the projection surface by comparing the individual distance values to the plurality of range-finding points obtained by the range-finding with the threshold; and a control part 35 for controlling the projecting state by the projection system according to the distance value to the range-finding point judged as such a state that it is within the effective range of the projection surface.
