PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new aromatic compound useful as a functional material or a synthetic raw material and an intermediate, etc., for medicines/agrochemicals, etc., to provide a method for producing the compound and to provide a polycondensation polymer obtained by the method and having excellent functions. SOLUTION: The method for producing the new aromatic compound represented by 3-bromo-4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone comprises the following steps: a step of reacting a halogenobenzene with a compound represented by general formula (II) (wherein, A represents an aryl group or a heterocyclic group; X<SB>2</SB>represents a halogen atom; X<SB>3</SB>represents a leaving group; and Y represents an -SO<SB>2</SB>-, a -CO- or an -SO-), a step of reducing the resultant compound, a step of further diazotizing the resultant compound and a step of reacting the obtained compound according to the Sandmeyer reaction.
