A controller for a reciprocal compressor comprises a synchronous motor for driving the reciprocal compressor and having a permanent magnet as a rotor, an inverter circuit for driving the synchronous motor, and a section for controlling the inverter circuit. The control section imparts a reverse rotation command for rotating the synchronous motor reversely with a motor torque not exceeding the maximum value of load torque to the inverter circuit for a predetermined time when the synchronous motor is started, and imparts a forward rotation command for rotating the synchronous motor forward upon elapsing the predetermined time.
