PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a required time for data duplication by reducing unnecessary reading and writing of data. SOLUTION: A duplication area calculation part 42 specifies an area recording valid information from the whole storage area of a duplication source storage medium 21 as an assignment space to which valid information is assigned, forms ASE that is assignment space information for the position or length of the assignment space, and supplies the ASE to a duplication execution part 43. The duplication execution part 43 reads assignment space descriptors by the ASE supplied from the duplication area calculation part 42 one by one to control a drive 12 and a drive 13 through a bus, reads only the assignment space information from the duplication source storage medium 21, and writes only the assignment space information to a duplication destination storage medium 22.
