An apparatus for persuading an orthopedic rod (114) into position in an orthopedic device (104) such as an implant or coupling element (104) is disclosed. The apparatus includes a body 200, a pusher member (300, 400) and a trigger (500) slidingly coupling the pusher member (300, 400) to the body (200). The pusher member (300, 400) includes a slide (300) and sleeve (400) attached to the slide (300). The sleeve (400) includes at least one pusher b ar (416). A ratchet (700, 700a) controls the translation of the pusher member (300, 400) along the body (200) to urge the rod (114) into position in the orthopedic device (104). The pusher member (300, 400) and body (200) define a cannula (110) so that a fastener (120) may be inserted once the rod (114) is in position. The apparatus is operable via a single hand. In addition, a method of urging an orthopedic rod (114) into a recess of an orthopedic devi ce (104) using the rod persuader (100) is provided.
