[Class 40 (iii).] A telegraph transmitter comprises a rotatable member U, a plurality of members L each corresponding to a particular position thereof, a corresponding plurality of keys A, selectors J1 .. 5 less in number than the keys for setting the members L, setting means actuated in a particular combination on the depression of a key for operating the selectors J1 .. 5 and means actuated by the member U for sending signals. The keys A on depression actuate five combination bars B1 .. 5 in varying combinations. The bars B1 .. 5 intercept the movements of selectors bars D1 .. 5 loosely pivoted at E, which bear on a cam sleeve F rotatable in a continuously rotating shaft G and clutched to the shaft G for one revolution only at each depression of the universal bar C by a key. The ends of the bars D1 .. 5 unless intercepted by the bars B1 .. 5 engage with arms K on five notched discs J1 .. 5 carried loosely on a stationary shaft H, rotating them, and aligning a combination of notches. Members L, corresponding to the keys A, are grouped round the discs J1 .. 5 and are pivoted on the disc M and are free to engage with the notches in the discs J1 .. 5 when the sleeve F is clutched to the shaft G, owing to the lateral movement of the bush P induced by the bar N bearing against a cam surface on the shaft G. The member L selected stops the rotation of an arm V of the wheel U frictionally geared to the shaft G. The wheel U carries a further notched wheel T, Fig. 2, which actuates an arm X sending a reversal for each step of the wheel U and a prolonged current for printing. A locking magnet LM is actuated by the direct current sent to the line and frees the bars B1 .. 5.
