VEHICLE DETECTION DEVICE AND VEHICLE DETECTION METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle detection device for surely detecting a vehicle candidate even when any disturbance is generated, without taking labor and time for setting a threshold for detecting a vehicle.

SOLUTION: This vehicle detection device is provided with a current image input means 1 for successively picking up an image and inputting it as a current image; a background image generation means 2 for generating a background image based on a plurality of current images; a circumscribed rectangle detection means 5 for detecting a vehicle candidate region having a featured region from a difference image based on the current image and the background image; a vehicle recognition means 6 for recognizing the featured region as a vehicle; and a vehicle decision means 8 for deciding the recognized vehicle as a vehicle. The vehicle decision means 8 calculates a current distribution value indicating a distribution value in the vehicle candidate region, and calculates a distribution threshold based on the distribution value in the vehicle candidate region of the plurality of current images, and decides that a recognition vehicle is a vehicle when the current distribution value is larger than the distribution threshold value as the result of the comparison of the current distribution value and the distribution threshold.
