PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detecting method and detecting device which highly accurately detects an inclination of a tool holder, without using an expensive sensor, when nipping foreign matter such as cutting chips between a main spindle and the tool holder. SOLUTION: An eddy current sensor 5 is arranged so that a head surface 5a of the eddy current sensor 5 is opposed from the oblique direction to a side surface 232a of a flange part 232 of the tool holder 2. When rotating the main spindle 1, the inclination of the tool holder 2 is detected on the basis of output of the eddy current sensor 5 generated by a change in the relative positional relationship between the flange part 232 of the tool holder 2 and the head surface 5a of the eddy current sensor 5.
