PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device whose positional accuracy is high by minimizing the positional deviation of a light valve such as a liquid crystal panel when fixing a light valve holding member for holding the light valve in a compound prism.

SOLUTION: A level difference is provided at the arm part of the light valve holding member joined to two surfaces of the compound prism in a direction separate from the surface of the compound prism.
