A system for displaying city furnishing objects on an electronic map comprises a storage unit (2) containing object data (3) and element type data (4), a working memory unit (5), a processing unit (6) and an optical output unit (7) having a display (8). The object data (3) comprise object position data and element type identifying data for identifying an element type of an object, and the element type data (4) comprise graphical representation data for at least one element type. A control signal is generated by the processing unit (6) based on both the object data (3) and the element type data (4), and is output to the optical output unit (7) in order to effect an object to be displayed by creating an instance of an object having an element type specified by the element type identifying data at a position specified by the object position data.
