Preparation of polycarboxylic acid alkylester by reactive distillation, comprises contacting an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt of polycarboxylic acid with alkanol in a distillation column, removing the ammonia formed in the esterification and distillating the water from the reaction. An independent claim is included for a method for the hydrogenation of polycarboxylic acid alkylester, comprising carrying out the esterification reaction, optionally purifying the carboxylic acid alkylester from the obtained ester containing reaction mixture, catalytically hydrating the ester and isolating the desired product.
