An image forming apparatus is provided to form an image of high quality without increasing a cost and a size of the apparatus. An image forming apparatus includes a middle transfer belt(31), a read unit, and a controller board(70). The read unit reads surface patterns of the middle transfer belt(31). The controller board(70) controls the movement of the middle transfer belt(31) in a direction orthogonal to a movement direction of the middle transfer belt(31) on the basis of the surface patterns of the middle transfer belt(31) read by the read unit.
