A colloidal suspension of a silsesquioxane having the unit general formula RSiO 3/2 , wherein R is a monovalent saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 5 C atoms with or without halogen substituents or a phenyl radical, the silsesquioxane having a particle size of 10 to 1000A, can be made by adding a silane of the formula RSi(OR11)3, wherein R11 is an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 C atoms, or a <FORM:1097477/C3/1> , <FORM:1097477/C3/2> , -CH2CH2OH or -CH2CH2OC2H5 radical, to a water-surfactant mixture with agitation, the amount of silane added being less than 10% by weight of the combined weights of the silane, water and surfactant, or less than 35% by weight if the rate of addition is less than 1 mol. of silane per hour. The surfactant used is preferably a compound of the formula R1C6H4SO3H or of the formula R1OSO2H wherein R1 is a monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of at least 6 C atoms, or a quaternary ammonium halide or hydroxide. If desired, the suspension may be neutralized. The silsesquioxane can be recovered from the suspension by the addition of salts or alkanols or by evaporation of water. Examples are given describing the above preparation of the suspensions. Uses.-For treating fabrics to render them soil resistant and as fillers in latexes. |
