Cleaning unit for webs (22) in papermaking machines comprises a scraper (18) mounted in front of a roller (12), over which the web passes. The scraper blade (42) contacts the roller. A transverse steam pipe (30) has jets (32) which feed steam on to the web before it reaches the scraper. An independent claim is included for a method for cleaning webs in papermaking machines using the unit.
