<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fetch and process video data and program guide information extracted from input data, encoded with a broadcast variable encoding format. <P>SOLUTION: In a system, an antenna 15 receives a digital bit stream, representing video information encoded with one among a plurality of different formats and transmitted through one among a plurality of transmission channels. Processors 17, 55, 20, 25, 30, 50 identify and extract program guide information, including a plurality of channel maps. The channel map links a video channel output and an encoding format with a transmission channel.
