Vinyl chloride is prepared from ethane by a process comprising the steps of: (a) reacting C1 2 directly with C 2 H 6 in contact with a finely divided inorganic solid at elevated temperatures to yield a gaseous reaction mixture of which the reactive ingredients consist predominantly of C 2 H 5 C1 and HC1; (b) passing the mixture of C 2 H 5 C1 and HC1 from (a) together with O 2 into contact with an oxychlorination catalyst to effect oxidative chlorination of said C 2 H 5 Cl to CH 2 Cl-CH 2 Cl; (c) thermally decomposing the CH 2 Cl- CH 2 C1 from (b) to produce CH 2 = CHC1 and HC1; (d) reacting C 2 H 6 , HC1 and O 2 in contact with a catalyst selected from siliceous materials, activated alumina, MnC1 2 supported on activated alumina, CaC1 2 supported on activated alumina, and LiC1 supported on activated alumina, at elevated temperature to produce a gaseous reaction mixture of which the reactive ingredients consist predominantly of C 2 H 4 and HC1, the HC1 for said reaction being obtained from the product of the thermal decomposition of CH 2 Cl-CH 2 Cl in steps (c) and (f) of the process; (e) passing the mixture of C 2 H 4 and HC1 from (d) together with O 2 into contact with an oxychlorination catalyst to effect oxidative chlorination of the C 2 H 4 therein to CH 2 C1-CH 2 C1; and (f) thermally decomposing the CH 2 C1-CH 2 C1 from (e) to produce CH 2 = CHC1 and HC1. Steps (b) and (e) may be carried out in a single reaction zone. Steps (c) and (f) may be combined in a single reaction zone. By-products obtained in Step (b) are trichloroethane, dichloroethylene and trichloroethylene.</p> |
