[Also in Divisions C4 and G2]α-Isobutyryl-y-butyrolactone (A) is prepared by reacting (a) ethyl isobutyrylacetate and ethylene oxide in the presence of sodium ethoxide, or (b) methyl isobutyrate, sodium hydride andγ-butyrolactone. 5-Hydroxy-2-methyl-3-hexanone (B) is prepared by the hydrolysis of (A) with aqueous HC1. 5-Acetoxy-2-methyl-3-hexanone (C) is prepared by the hydrolysis of (A) with potassium acetate and acetic acid. 2 - (3 - Acetoxypropyl) - 3,3 - dimethyl - 3H- indole (D) and 2-(3-Acetoxypropyl) -3,3-dimethyl- 3H-benz(e)-indole (E) are prepared by reacting (C) with phenylhydrazine and 2-naphthylhydrazine respectively, followed by treatment with cone. H 2 SO 4 and acetic acid. (D) and (E) are hydrolysed to the corresponding-3- hydrox-propyl derivatives (G) and (F) respectively, by KOH. 9,9 - Dimethyl - 2,2 - dihydro - 1H,9H - pyrrolo 1,2-a indolium bromide (H) and 11,11-dimethyl- 8,9 - dihydro - 10H,11H - benzo - e - pyrrolo- 1,2-a indolium bromide (J) are prepared by reacting (G) and (F) respectively with HBr in acetic acid.</p> |
