A device for automatically stopping an escalator when an accident clogging the escalator exit occurs. Steps are supported near the escalator exit from below by simple beams that are supported at both ends, and a variation in reaction force caused by a load moving on the simple beams and occurring at a supporting point on the exit side is measured. By this, the movement of an escalator passenger can be accurately detected.
