PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an echo suppressing method/apparatus in which echo is normally suppressed even when estimation errors of a coupling amount and an erasing amount are generated and further, sound quality is not changed. SOLUTION: In a desired signal, whether echo or a transmission voice is great is judged and in a case where echo can be judged greater, regardless of the magnitude of the level of a transmission signal in an error signal, a suppression coefficient (c) is controlled to a small value. A target transmission signal level is then reduced and the amount of an echo component to be sent is suppressed. In a case where the transmission voice is judged greater than the echo component, the suppression coefficient is made into "1" or value close to "1" and the transmission voice is sent out as it is.
