A welding electrode test assembly has a visible light optical emitter directed at the electrode under examination, and an optical system that directs reflected or scattered light to a detector. The emitter and detector are a combined collimator lens system. The reflected or scattered light is returned via beam divider. A mirror is located in close proximity to the electrode under examination and reflects the outgoing beam transverse to the optical axis of the auto-collimator lens system. The emitter, auto-collimator lens and detector are all located in close proximity to the electrode under examination. The light deflector (50) is a mirror (52), twin mirror (54) or prism. The beam divider is a semi-reflective mirror (62) or a mirror with a central hole. The emitter side incorporates a focusing device that is stronger than the focusing from the reflected light. Also claimed is a twin electrode test assembly within a single housing.
