PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which can be miniaturized in a lateral direction by commonly using an ADF transfer reading region and an FBS reading region. SOLUTION: An original retaining cover 8 having an ADF 7 is provided on a scanner unit 3. A platen glass 20 is provided on a surface of an original placing platen 6 which opposes the original retaining cover 8. The entire surface of the platen glass 20 is set on the FBS reading region 18, and one part thereof is set on the ADF transfer reading region 17. A member for physically discriminating the FBS reading region 18 from the ADF transfer reading region 17 is not provided on the surface of the platen glass 20. A picking-up member 40 is provided on one end side of the ADF 7 side of the platen glass 20, and an a positioning member 41 is provided on the other end side opposing the one end side.
