The device comprises mounting means 12 for a light source 14 for illuminating the orifice, a connector 28 for detachably mounting a dilator 16, and dilator actuating means 15,18,20 for operating a mounted dilator. In use slide 15, 18 is moved so that projection 20 moves down through a V-shaped groove on the rear surface 22 of the dilator. As the width of the groove reduces the movement causes the blades to move apart. The actuating means may be spring biased. The device may also incorporate a moveably mounted magnifying lens (250, fig 6). The device may have electrical connection means 11 for a handheld battery unit.
