An instrument for measuring the air speed, distance travelled and angles of incidence and sideslip of an aircraft comprises an elongated body having a rotatable nose section carrying propeller blades, and mounted at its centre of gravity by a universal joint on a strut fixed to the aircraft (e.g. extending forwardly therefrom); an annular tail unit (15, 16) (Fig. 1, not shown) provides directional stability. The axes of the universal joint are arranged vertically and transversely and relative movement about them is detected by arrangements of capacitors (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) or potentiometers (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). The blades (13) are individually fixed to a boss (9) and rotate a perforated plate (11) arranged between a light (7) and a photo-cell (8) associated with a counter from which the air speed and distance travelled are derived. The elongate body has a front portion (1) carrying the blades and a rear portion (2) connected to the universal joint and the two portions are attached to each other by a plug-and-socket connection or bayonet fastening.
