A license plate flipper includes a pair of arms 416, 418 pivoting on a rod 424 and having motors 412, 414 mounted coaxially on their distal ends. A license plate holder plate 442 is mounted to the coaxial shafts of the motors to be pivoted about this axis. As the plate is rotated by the motors the edge of the plate slides along the surface of the backing plate 410 to which the whole contraption is mounted until the plate is at 90 degrees to the backing plate and the arms are angled away from the backing plate and then continues to slide until the plate is flipped through the full 180 degrees and the arms have returned to be aligned parallel with the backing surface. In the flat position the distance of the pivot axis of the plate from the backing plate is less than half the width of the plate extending perpendicular to the pivot axis.
