The method involves providing a gas tank (3) with a membrane (4) above which a wire or cable (5) is installed in a transversal manner. The wire or cable is fixed to the gas tank at its one end (6), and provided with a weight (8) at its another end (7), where the weight permits to maintain the wire or cable in a stretched position. A distance from a point (P) to a reference point (R) of the end (7) of the wire or cable is measured using sonar to calculate quantity of gas (2) in the gas tank using the measured distance. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining quantity of a gas in a gas tank.
