PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small transport device, accurately detecting the transport position of a transported article and an inexpensive printer using the same. SOLUTION: An encoder plate 41 is provided with a number of slits 41a formed on the outer peripheral part, and the center thereof is journaled to the end of a roller 21a, so that the encoder plate is rotated integrally with the roller 21a. A photo interrupter 42 optically detects the slits 41a and outputs a pulse signal string 50. A position detecting part 16a calculates a change amount▵T of period of a pulse signal caused by a transport load when an instant film sheet 11 is held by the paired transport rollers 21, and detects the leading edge when the change amount is larger than a threshold TO. The transport speed is calculated based on the pulse signal string 50 obtained after the leading edge is detected to thereby detect the transport position of the instant film sheet 11.
