An image display apparatus and a method for improving picture quality of the image display apparatus are provided to determine whether an error frame is generated in the event of scene change using an artifact level and adjust the artifact level when the error frame is generated to compensate the artifact level. An image display apparatus includes a calculator(140), a determination unit(150), and a compensator(160). The calculator calculates an artifact level difference corresponding to a difference between an artifact level of a current frame and an artifact level of a previous frame. The determination unit compares the artifact level difference with a predetermined artifact level reference value and determines whether the current frame is an error frame in the event of scene change. The compensator adjusts artifact levels of parts of continuous frames following the current frame when the determination unit determines that the current frame is an error frame. |
