PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a grain-oriented magnetic steel sheet excellent in magnetic properties and glass coating properties, and to provide MgO for a separation agent for annealing used in the production method. SOLUTION: In the method for producing a grain-oriented electromagnetic steel sheet, a cold rolled grain-oriented magnetic steel sheet is applied with a separation agent for annealing and then annealed at an elevated temperature. The MgO used for the separation agent for annealing has an absolute value of zeta potential of 20 mV or more, 40% citric acid activity at 20°C of 100-200, an average particle size of 1.5-4.5μm, and a standard deviation of particle size distribution of 4 or more.
