PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a braking force retaining device of a vehicle capable of restricting deterioration of vehicle stability in the case of starting a vehicle in a slope when releasing the state in which braking force is retained to each of wheels, and to provide a method of releasing braking force retaining condition of a vehicle. SOLUTION: In the case wherein an accelerator pedal is operated during execution of hill hold control, degree of slope gr of the road surface, on which the vehicle stops, is detected, and upper side wheels and lower side wheels are respectively set among the wheels based on a result of detection. The brake hydraulic pressure inside a wheel cylinder corresponding to the upper side wheels is reduced first. Thereafter, when the time T1 passed after starting reduction of the brake hydraulic pressure inside the wheel cylinder corresponding to the upper side wheels reaches a time threshold value KT1 or more, the brake hydraulic pressure inside a wheel cylinder corresponding to the lower side wheels is reduced.
