An automatic tensioner, especially for a timing chain in an IC engine, has a hydraulic cylinder (10) pressing onto a hinged tensioner (6, 7) and fitted with a return spring inside the cylinder. The spring is located by a pillar shaped guide which centralizes the spring and also reduces the hydraulic volume inside the cylinder. This ensures that the operating hydraulic pressure is rapidly reached on switching on the engine.
