<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To release the brakes speedily with proper timing according to a traveling condition of a preceding vehicle to shift to acceleration control quickly to start a vehicle when the vehicle controlled by an inter-vehicle distance control type constant speed traveling device is started by the operation of a driver. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the vehicle, controlled to travel at a constant speed while keeping a distance between the preceding vehicle and its own vehicle by the inter-vehicle distance control type constant speed traveling device, is started by the starting operation of the driver from a stopping state by brake control, a brake control pressure is reduced and varied at a reduction gradient in proportion to the distance between the preceding vehicle and its own vehicle and a relative vehicle speed if the distance is longer than a collision unavoidable distance. Thus, the brakes are released speedily with proper timing according to the traveling condition of the preceding vehicle to shift to the acceleration control without taking needlessly long time.
