A method of oxidation of vanadium (IV) to vanadium (V) in aqueous solutions 2 which comprises adding a di-sodium salt of anthraquinone di-sulphonic acid (ADA) to the solution. The ADA may be regenerated by bubbling air into a reaction vessel 1 through a bubbler 7. The vanadium may be in the form of potassium metavanadate. The ADA may be the 2, 7 isomer. The method may include the use of the solution for the removal of carbon dioxide from a gas stream.
