<p>A vacuum cleaner comprises a low efficiency cyclone 14a, 14b and a plurality of higher efficiency cyclones 25a, 26a, 27a mounted externally of the lower efficiency cyclone 14a, 14b. At least two of the higher efficiency cyclones 25a, 26a, 27a are arranged at positions which are spaced apart from the rotational axis of the low efficiency cyclone 14a, 14b by respective different distances. The high efficiency cyclones 25a, 26a, 27a may be arranged in a line extending away from the low efficiency cyclone 14a, 14b and they may be arranged in parallel or in series with each other. More than one low efficiency cyclone 14a, 14b may be present which may be connected in series or parallel and connected to a respective group of higher efficiency cyclones 25a, 26a, 27a. The higher efficiency cyclones 25a, 26a, 27a can be connected to a flow duct 24a which extends radially of the low efficiency cyclones 14a, 14b. The flow duct 24a is connected to the high efficiency cyclones 25a, 26a, 27a at inlets thereof, these inlets are stepped with respect to each other. The cross-sectional area of the flow duct 24a may vary along its length in proportion to the number of cyclones connected to it (figure 4).</p> |
