The engine has a cylinder and gas exchange valves controlled by two cams (14, 15) provided on respective camshafts (16, 17) having a cylindrical guidance surface. Each shaft has an adjustable phase position to modify control time of the valves. Rocker levers actuate the valves only when both the cams act upon the corresponding rocker levers, where the levers are supported on a common axle.
