PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disposer in which a crushing state of thrown-in garbage can be recognized and damage of a crushing part due to dropping of foreign matters into a charging port can be prevented. SOLUTION: The disposer 1 is provided with the crushing part for crushing the garbage, the garbage charging port provided above the crushing part and a hopper 2 having an inclined part for guiding the garbage into the charging port. An opening/closing lid 6 covering a part of an opening at an upper part of the hopper 2 is provided and a ranging sensor 65 is provided to the opening/closing lid 6 while facing the crushing part. A control part 80 is connected with the crushing part and the ranging sensor 65 and controls the crushing part. After starting to drive the crushing part by the control part 80, when a distance output from the ranging sensor 65 becomes a predetermined distance, driving of the crushing part is stopped by the control part 80.
