<p>Perylene-bisimide radical anions (I) in the form of salts are new. Perylene-bisimide radical anions (I), of formulae (5), (6) and (7) in the form of salts, especially with tetrabutylammonium, but also with Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, ammonium, mono-, di or tri-alkylammonium, H+>, H3O+> or other hydrated protons or protonated forms are new. R1-R8 each : H, linear 1-37C alkyl in which up to 10 CH2 are independently replaced by CO, O, S, Se, Te, cis- or trans-CH=CH (where one CH may be replaced by N), Ctriple boundC, any phenylene, any divalent residue of pyridine, thiophene, naphthalene or anthracene (in the last two one or two CH may be replaced by N), and up to 12 H atoms of CH2 may be replaced independently by F, Cl, Br, iodo, cyano, linear 1-18C alkyl (in which (i) up to six CH2 may be independently replaced by any of the atoms or groups listed above and (ii) up to 12 H atoms of CH2 may be replaced independently by F, Cl, Br, iodo, cyano or linear 1-18C alkyl (the last of which may have up to six CH2 independently replaced by any of the atoms or groups listed above)), and free valencies of methine groups, or quaternary C atoms, may be linked in pairs to form rings (e.g. cyclohexane); also R1-R8 may = F, Cl, Br or iodo.
