PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase torque by manipulating ignition timing toward the optimal ignition timing and manipulating engine compression ratio to high compression ratio side within a range not to cause knocking. SOLUTION: Under a predetermined steady state operation, target ignition timing tADV is manipulated toward the optimal ignition timing along MBT line in an advanced angle side of base target ignition timing tADV0, and target compression ratio tεis manipulated to a high compression ratio side of base target compression ratio tε0. If knocking is detected during the manipulation, manipulation quantity just before knocking is stored as learning value and is reflected to establishment of tADV0, tε0 of next time and after.
