<p>In a modifacation of the copolymers of Specification 1,031,254 there are provided linear, amorphous, unsaturated, high molecular weight copolymers of n-decatriene-1,5,9 with ethylene and/or aliphatic olefins of formula RCH=CH2, where R is a C1- 6 alkyl group, each decatriene unit of the copolymers containing at least one double bond. Preferred olefins are ethylene, propylene and butene-1. The copolymers may be prepared by bulk or solution polymerization, e.g. in hydrocarbons or halogenated hydrocarbons, using halogen-containing catalysts derived from a Group IV or V transition metal compound and an organo metallic or hydride of a Group I, II or III metal or a complex organometallic compound or complex hydride of a Group I or III metal, optionally together with a complexing agent such as an amine, ether, thioether or phosphine. The polymers may be made into shaped articles such as pipes and tubes, foils and plates, and may be vulcanized, or co-vulcanized with natural and synthetic rubbers. Many suitable catalyst components are listed and examples describe the copolymerization of n-decatriene-1,5,9, ethylene and propylene in heptane in the presence of catalysts formed from diethyl aluminium chloride and (1) vanadyl trichloride, (2) vanadium tetrachloride and (3) vanadium triacetylacetonate, the copolymers being compounded with carbon black, zinc oxide, sulphur, tetramethylthiuram monosulphide and mercaptobenzothiazole and vulcanized.</p> |
