<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To supply an oxygen-containing gas between fuel cells in a fuel cell stack with sufficiently high concentration. <P>SOLUTION: This fuel cell stack device includes: a fuel cell stack composed by a plurality of solid electrolyte fuel cells each having a columnar fuel gas passage axially penetrating it; a manifold supporting each of the fuel cells at its axial one end and having an internal space communicating with the fuel gas passages; and an oxygen-containing gas surrounding means for surrounding the fuel cell stack so as to prevent diffusion of the oxygen-containing gas supplied to the circumference of the fuel cell stack. The oxygen-containing gas surrounding means is preferably a wall-like frame body installed by interposing a space in the axial direction of the fuel cells between the manifold and itself.
