PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce cooling loss by making an engine heat-insulated. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine is provided with a piston 22 reciprocating in a cylinder. Engine compression ratio is changed based on an engine operation condition. In the piston 22, a piston top surface consists of material 22a of low thermal conductivity and piston ring groove parts 42a, 42b consist of material of high thermal conductivity.
