A method and a system for providing a location service are provided to provide location information including a sector unit of an MS(Mobile Station) to the MS, and provide a location information even to an MS that does not include a GPS support chip through an SMS message. The first MS(100a) transmits a location service request message including its registration information and that of the second MS(100b) according to a service request from a subscriber. An HLR(400a) manages MSs by pre-set prefix and manages information of MSCs(Mobile Switching Centers) located according to each MS. When a location service request message is provided, a PDE(Position Determination Entity)(500) requests an HLR(400b) that manages a prefix of the second MS(100b) to check the current location of the second MS(100b) through registration information of the second MS(100b), and when information of an MSC where the second MS(100b) is located is provided from the HLR(400b), the PDE(500) recognizes location information of the second MS(100b) and transmits an SMS message including location information of the second MS(100b) to the first MS(100a).
