PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent device capable of suppressing the occurrence of defects by achieving light-emitting characteristics having a high efficiency and a long life. SOLUTION: A manufacturing method includes a step of forming an organic layer 5 on an anode 3; a step of forming a metal thin film 9a on the organic layer 4, and exposing the metal thin film 9a to an atmosphere containing at least oxygen to oxidize it, thereby forming an insulating layer 9 consisting of a metal oxide; and a step of forming a cathode 4 on the insulating layer 9.
