<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming method using a thermal transfer method, which provides a high density and a high image quality and excels in the fastness of an image. <P>SOLUTION: In the image forming method, a thermal transfer image is formed by a process wherein a thermal transfer image accepting sheet having on a substrate one accepting layer containing a polymeric latex and at least one heat insulating layer containing a hollow polymer and not containing a resin having no resistance to an organic solvent, other than the hollow polymer, and a thermal transfer sheet having on a substrate a thermal transfer layer containing one kind of compound expressed by formula (Y), (M) or (C) are laid on each other so that the accepting layer of the thermal transfer image accepting sheet and the thermal transfer layer of the thermal transfer sheet come into contact with each other, and thermal energy conforming to an image signal is given thereto. In formula (Y), D1 denotes a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group or the like, D2 the hydrogen atom, the alkyl group or an aryl group, D3 the aryl group and D4 and D5 each denote the hydrogen atom or the alkyl group independently. In formula (M), D6-D10 each denote the hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, the alkyl group or an amino group and D11 and D12 each denote the hydrogen atom or the alkyl group independently. X, Y and Z denote =C(D13)- or nitrogen atoms. Herein D13 denotes the hydrogen atom, the alkyl group or the amino group.
