<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure a transportation capacity without increasing an occupied area of an elevator in a high-rise building. <P>SOLUTION: This elevator system 1 comprises local elevators 7a to 7d operated between predetermined stories and a rapid elevator 6 servicing for only predetermined stories. The local elevators forms a multi-car elevator or a twin-car elevator in which cars are disposed in the same hoistway.
