PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly execute display when the reproduction speed of auxiliary video data changes from single-speed or over into single-speed in shuttle reproduction and reproduced video data are switched from the auxiliary video data into principal video data. SOLUTION: The principal video data using long GOP and subjected to compression coding and the auxiliary video data obtained from the principal video data and whose resolution is lowered than that of the principal video data are recorded on a recording medium. In the case of the shuttle reproduction, the auxiliary video data are outputted. When the reproduction speed from the shuttle reproduction is changed into single-speed (a point of time A in Fig. 22), reading of the principal video data from the recording medium is started. Decoding is started at a point of time (a point of time B in Fig.22) when decodable data are pooled in a buffer, and when outputable frames are stored in the buffer, the output is switched from the auxiliary video data into the principal video data and an output of the principal video data is started (a point of time C in Fig. 22).
